It's a new day in The World, and a special quest is abound. But wait, the players cry! The game isn't open yet! Shush you, the GMs warned. This is only a test drive meme. The game is simple. You've woken up in a lush field of grass, soft to the touch and a little damp with dew. Spring has reached The World, and there's a randomized checklist in your hand. Your goal is to catch five of the Lucky Animals bounding about, and it's perfectly fine to work together. In fact, we encourage it! Collect them all and deposit them in a pen where the GMs await. There's plenty for everyone, but they will be watching closely for cheaters. Any items won in this pre-game minigame will carry over once holyrelic opens, so get your limited edition item set today! Magnificent prizes await you, so go forth! Just beware; some of the Lucky Animals aren't really so lucky and have their own side effects. (All participants who apply will receive a mochi hat of the player's choosing. They can be either small (think mini tophats) or large (like a harvest cleric's hat) and any of the three colors, with any variety of accessories. All participants who finish the quest will earn a spring-themed beginner item set! It will include one weapon and a bonus item set with five restoratives, five randomized buff spells, and five randomized food items.)

If they're sending us after Dire anything at our levels then I'm finding a different plot hook.

The word 'dire' means you take a normal animal and turn it into the most hideous thing you can possibly imagine that doesn't actually require a Will save just to look at. And increase its killing power something like tenfold.

[ Normal animal = puppy.

Hideous thing = a big giant shadow.

Dire puppy = a big giant shadow puppy that has access to Almighty skills, is immune to all elements and physical attacks and one hit KOs everything it comes across-- ]

...That sounds terrifying. I don't think I could beat one right now. [ Hmm. Then, suddenly cheerful: ] As long as we stick to the cute ones, we should be safe, right?

So it seems (and it's nice to have a quest that doesn't involve killing everything we see), but it seems too easy. There's bound to be some complication.

Let's try it out! We won't know for sure until we've tried it.

[ Scanning the area -- well, there's a Qi Lin near by and it's on her list. Mumbles, ] Qi Lin... Kirin...? [ Turning to Roy, smiling. ] How about that one?

All right, you head left and I'll head right. We'll split up, try to flank it, and start rolling Grapple checks.

[inhearts]

Okay, ready when you are!

[greatcleavage]

[Roy sets off at a double-move to circle wide around the... whatever it was, he didn't recognize it. Suitably positioned, he watches for his apparent companion to get into place... then charges the thing, arms wide, to seize it!]

[ Minako does the same and she follows his movements, matching him.

The Qi Lin hears Roy and bolts to one side -- where Minako is coming from. Upon seeing her, the creature immediately turns away and runs in the opposite direction ... where Roy is coming in from. Roll to see if your grapple is a success! ]

[Roy is a fighter with good Strength modifiers. Also throwing himself at the thing.]

Gotcha! [Picking up the squirming creature as he gets to his feet.]

That was great! [ Coming to a stop, Minako claps her hands together, beaming. She leans forward slightly, watching the Qi Lin curiously. ] Now that I get to see it close up, it's really cute!

Ha ha, it kind of is, isn't it? If someone's trying to get into the pet business, they might have a good start here.

[inhearts]

Do you think we'll be able to keep these as pets? [ Still looking over the Qi Lin. ] ...Oh! We have to put it inside one of the pens, right?

[greatcleavage]

Well we certainly wouldn't just put it in an arbitrary inventory slot in which it exists unharmed and invulnerable as if in temporal stasis. That would just be silly.

[Beat.]

Yeah, let's go drop it off.

[inhearts]

[ ... ] Is that how you keep a pet?

[greatcleavage]

Actually it's a lot like how our party wizard kept his familiar. But that's a weirder case.

[inhearts]

Was it a cat?

[ Starts heading for one of the pens but she'll let him set the pace. ]

[greatcleavage]

[Hey, they're all Medium creatures here. And he's not running or anything.]

Raven, actually. It understood Common but refused to speak it.

[inhearts]

Oh? A talking raven? Did it have three legs?

[greatcleavage]

No, it was perfectly normal. Aside from being bound to V magically... but that's perfectly normal too, for a familiar.

[inhearts]

Ah, I see! Do you have a familiar yourself, mister...?

[greatcleavage]

Roy. Roy Greenhilt, and no. I'm a fighter. My companion is my sword.

[Ah, here's a pen. He gently puts the critter down inside it.] There you go, little guy.

[inhearts]

[ To the Qi Lin: ] We'll be back, okay?

And it's nice to meet you, Roy-san! Shall we start looking for the next one?

[greatcleavage]

[He isn't sure how this suddenly became an adventuring party of two, but, oh well, why not?]

Sure, what's next on the list?

A Nue. [ Offers the list out to Roy so he can see the pretty pictures-- ] It's definitely much cuter than what I thought it'd look like.

[greatcleavage]

[Taking that list.] Hey, it kind of is. It's a nice change from "Dire" everything.

Okay, let's try over there. [Monkeys live in trees, right? So he's pointing in the direction of a couple trees.]
