It's a new day in The World, and a special quest is abound. But wait, the players cry! The game isn't open yet! Shush you, the GMs warned. This is only a test drive meme. The game is simple. You've woken up in a lush field of grass, soft to the touch and a little damp with dew. Spring has reached The World, and there's a randomized checklist in your hand. Your goal is to catch five of the Lucky Animals bounding about, and it's perfectly fine to work together. In fact, we encourage it! Collect them all and deposit them in a pen where the GMs await. There's plenty for everyone, but they will be watching closely for cheaters. Any items won in this pre-game minigame will carry over once holyrelic opens, so get your limited edition item set today! Magnificent prizes await you, so go forth! Just beware; some of the Lucky Animals aren't really so lucky and have their own side effects. (All participants who apply will receive a mochi hat of the player's choosing. They can be either small (think mini tophats) or large (like a harvest cleric's hat) and any of the three colors, with any variety of accessories. All participants who finish the quest will earn a spring-themed beginner item set! It will include one weapon and a bonus item set with five restoratives, five randomized buff spells, and five randomized food items.)

It must have thought we were being hostile. Well, I wasn't trying to hurt it too badly... I wonder why it didn't run away though.

It didn't look like a Shadow, and Shadows don't usually run away either.

You've fought Shadows before??

[Roy, of course, is thinking of the kind of Shadow HE knows.]

Yeah, I -- my friends and I are fighting them. Or... I was, until I found myself here. If you don't mind me asking, how did you find out about the Shadows, Roy-san?

They're pretty common undead, and I do a lot of undead-fighting. Not by choice.

...Zombies?

[greatcleavage]

Those too. Zombie, ghouls, ghasts... My enemy is a lich, with an evil cleric working for him. [His knuckles tighten on the hilt of his sword.]

We're probably not talking about the same Shadows! I don't think she's a lich. [ Beat. ] Or a cleric.

[greatcleavage]

Wait, your shadows are also people? Is this some prestige class with an overdramatic name?

[inhearts]

No, Shadows aren't people. They're demons. [ The...easiest explanation anyway. ] 'She' is their mother and the final enemy. We were going to prepare for the last battle but... [ She indicates their surroundings. ]

Clearly, not the same shadows as I was thinking about. Wait, you've been fighting an epic campaign against a great evil too?

I mean, I guess I shouldn't judge by looks, but you seem a bit young for it.

It can't be helped. Not everyone knows about the Shadows. Besides, I think we've been doing a great job!

Oh, a "we must do it because no one else knows or understands the threat" thing. That's a better reason for adventuring then... well... some I've heard...

Really? What are they?

Let's just say that wanting to show up my old man was, in retrospect, not the wisest or most noble of motives.

[Roy sighs, because he doesn't WANT to talk about it, but part of his obligations as team leader and Lawful Good-aligned hero-type is to pass on the benefits of experience when possible.]

I learned a couple of important lessons. One of which was to stop the horrific evil because it is a horrific evil and not because my dad doesn't think I can do it.

I see... You must have fought for a really long time now, Roy-san.

It's not so bad. You'd be amazed how relaxing being dead for several months was. Not that I recommend that as a good vacation if you can avoid it, but it sure recharged me.

Oh! You faked your death?

[greatcleavage]

No, no, I was really dead for a while. Till our party cleric resurrected me.

Re-Resurrected? [ Staring. ]

Yes, clerics can do that. Or could, before all this happened. [He waves a hand at their surroundings.] Who knows now?
